Spatial Nomad I / rammed earth wall
2024
Yak dung paper cast
The Spatial Nomad series begins with an encounter on the grasslands. An elderly herder described how the yellow earth she once used to build stoves had become inaccessible, fenced off through pasture privatization. In response, she dismantled part of an old rammed-earth wall and reused its soil to construct a stove. This act revealed a mode of material resilience in which structures are not fixed, but continually dismantled, reassembled, and adapted in response to changing conditions.
Rammed earth is one of the few relatively fixed architectural forms on the grasslands. Made from compacted yellow earth mixed with yak dung and local aggregates, these structures emerge from and extend the land itself. When abandoned, they gradually erode and return to the land, their spatial presence dissolving over time.
Cast in yak dung paper, this work records a century-old rammed earth wall at a specific moment. The paper cast operates as a spatial nomad, translating a site-bound architectural condition into a portable spatial state.
